Description

Bojjannakonda Vizag dates back to around the 4th to 9th centuries AD and was a major Buddhist monastic complex during that period. The site is part of the Sankaram village area and includes rock-cut caves, stupas, chaityas, and monasteries carved into the hill. Moreover, the presence of multiple stupas on the hilltop shows that it was an important center for Buddhist learning and worship.

The site is famous for its rock‑cut caves and monolithic stupas carved into the hillside. These structures were used by monks for meditation, teaching, and communal worship. The presence of chaityas (prayer halls) and viharas (monastic dwellings) indicates that Bojjannakonda was a thriving monastic complex.

One of the most striking features of Bojjannakonda is the large seated Buddha carved into the rock, surrounded by smaller figures and stupas. This sculpture reflects the transition from early Hinayana practices, which emphasized simple stupas, to Mahayana traditions that celebrated Buddha images and elaborate iconography.

Excavations at the site revealed coins, pottery, and inscriptions, providing insights into the cultural and economic life of the period. These findings suggest that Bojjannakonda was not only a spiritual hub but also a center of trade and cultural exchange.

The twin site of Lingalakonda, located nearby, complements Bojjannakonda with its numerous stupas scattered across the hill. Together, they represent one of the most extensive Buddhist complexes in Andhra Pradesh, highlighting the region’s importance in the spread of Buddhism.

Today, Bojjannakonda stands as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. Efforts have been made to preserve its heritage while promoting it as a tourist destination. Visitors can explore the caves, stupas, and sculptures, gaining a deeper appreciation of Buddhism’s legacy in coastal Andhra Pradesh.
